So today we had a sort of trial run to prep for the run test we’ll be having in a few weeks. The test will be held at Sunnyside and all of our runs so far have been at High Park, so today’s practice was held at Sunnyside so we could get a feel for the route, get to know the landmarks, figure out our pace, and so on. I also realized that I used the word “so” five times in two sentences, and that’s really just poor writing, so I apologize for that.
I consider myself a gym regular. I gym regularly. This would probably be the definition, no? I usually go to the University of Toronto Athletic Centre, but will occasionally gym at home, because my condo has a fairly decent gym (for a condo), or even at Hart House if there is no other option. I’ve only ever been to Goldring once, but wasn’t a huge fan because the lights shine directly into my eyes when I bench. Now, being a gym regular, I consider myself somewhat well-versed in gym etiquette. While normally I don’t experience any issues in the gym, every now and then something stupid happens and I just don’t understand how people can live this way.
Saturday was gender day at Nationals with the longer distances: 500 m and 2 km races! Lots of racing and podium for everybody.

I decided to skip Montreal Challenge and post it at another time so the Nationals post wouldn’t be too long in coming. A lot of things happened this weekend and it was quite an eventful regatta. Things didn’t necessarily go perfectly, but that’s the way life is.

Iron Dragons had OC testing two weekends ago in Pickering. It was a good mid-season test to see how people were progressing throughout the summer. I’ve helped out every year at OC testing, though I wasn’t able to this year at the beginning of the season because it took place while all the coaches were at the NDRC spring camp.
Every past season I was one of the steers, since we test in OC-2’s. But not this year! Steering is the worst. You’re essentially out all day in the sun, getting hot and flustered, and getting tired because you’re paddling all day and people testing don’t want to get too worn out so they either take it easy paddling to the start line or don’t paddle at all and you’re just stuck paddling that heavy boat alone and hating life. That was a run-on sentence.
The summer’s barely started (technically it’s not even summer yet) and we’ve already had two regattas in one weekend with a third this past weekend (post about Pickering coming up eventually, probably). Going to be busy!
Last weekend was a moderately successful weekend. Iron Dragons participated in Milton, where I drummed and coached, and NDRC Women participated in the Toronto Women’s Regatta, where I steered (I was content not to paddle since paddling is really too much work).
I’ve been a bit slack with updating the blog recently, mainly from being so busy. I’ve been doing my best to update at least once a week but I didn’t manage to do that last week so I’ll try to post at least two this week.
Boat practices are now in full swing for all teams, post spring-camp (Iron Dragons and NDRC each had spring training camps during the past two weekends, respectively, which I will attempt to cover at some point in the near future).
Yesterday’s practice started out kinda cool with several people wearing different-coloured tops. We made a rainbow together!
